Hockey Equipment Checklist

Below is a list of the essential equipment needed for safe ice hockey participation.

Athletic Supporter w/cup:
Elastic waist band with pouch for plastic cup worn for protection of the groin.

Jock Shorts:
Used as an alternative to the Athletic Supporter. Comes with Velcro strips and in a short format for comfort and to aid in holding up the socks.

Elbow pads:
Necessary and approved equipment that when properly fitted protects the elbow, forearm and lower bicep/tricep from contact that may occur during the sport of hockey.

Face Cage:
A traditional mask that is made from metal bars that is used to protect the face. Cages are required by all Youth Hockey Leagues.

Face Shield:
A full or half face shield made of shatterproof clear plastic that is used to protect the face and eyes. (Optional)

Hockey Helmet:
Necessary and approved piece of equipment that protects the head from contact that may occur during the sport of hockey. Cages are required by all Youth Hockey Leagues.

Hockey Gloves:
Necessary and approved equipment that when properly fitted protects the hand, fingers, wrist and forearm(except short gloves) from slashes and other contact.

Hockey Stick:
Right or Left?... When the player is holding the stick, whichever hand is at the bottom of the shaft will determine right or left.

Goal Stick:
What hand will the player hold the goal stick in?... If the goal stick is held in the right hand, you will need a "left". If the goal stick is held in the left hand, you will need a "right".

Garter belts:
Elastic belt that wraps around the waist and provides attachments to hold up hockey socks.
(Not necessary if you have jock shorts with Velcro built in)

Hockey Socks:
Large sock that fits over the top of the shin pad and keeps it protected from the outside elements and helps hold pads in place.

Jersey:
Keeps the upper body equipment from becoming exposed to outside elements and keeps equipment in place.

Mouthguard:
U- shaped, formfitting plastic placed in the mouth to protect teeth and reduce risk of concussions. Most models are attachable to the face mask.

Shin Pads:
Hard plastic, foam padding and cloth piece of equipment worn to protect shins and knees from contact.

Pants (or Breezers):
Foam padding and hard plastic contained in a cloth shell used to protect waist, hips, thighs and calf.

Shoulder Pads:
Hard plastic, foam padding and cloth piece of equipment worn to protect shoulders, upper frontal chest and upper back from contact. Some models also have attachments for protection of mid section and sternum.

Skates:
Leather, nylon and plastic boot with plastic frame and metal blade attached to bottom for ice skating. Skates are generally 1-1/2 smaller than shoe size.

Skate Guards or Soakers:
Plastic, rubber or cloth material that is placed over skate blade while not skating to protect blade from dulling and nicking.
